- You need cables cat 5. A lot of it. You have to hire a cabling guy to run the cables. Each cable will have a RJ45 jack at each end. You need Switches either in each room or at a central point. You need routers if you want internet connection to be shared or distributed. You need a Server, with Windows Server 2003/2008 software. You need a system administrator to install and setup the Domain server/client software and users and sharing. You better hire a network guy who can setup the whole lot and hand it over to the systems admin. Setting up 400 computers is not for amateurs or geeks, it is a job for a professional.
- Well, whatever you do, you will need cabling for each drop. I'd go with at least CAT5e or CAT6. If the rooms work out such that each floor can have a central place to terminate the cables, that would be best. This room will house both the network drops and the network hardware. I'd have to ask what this LAN will be used for and what your budget is. If this was for an office environment, I'd recommend putting a Cisco switch chassis on each floor with 48-port 10/100 slot in them. I'd connect the two chassis with fiber. I'd get a gigabit module to connect the servers. The cost of something like this would break down as follows: Two Cisco 4510R switch chassis (one per floor): $14,000. Ten 48-port 10/100 switch modules: $30,000 One 48-port 10/100/1000 switch module: $6,000 Two supervisor cards (one per switch): $8,000 Two fiber GBICs: $1,000 Approximate total: $59,000 Now, if this is outside your budget, there are lots of other options, with varying levels of cost/performance. And as the first poster said...this isn't a job for someone who is unqualified. There are lots of ways to screw up this job, so make sure you're working with a professional.
