Computer Diagrams

How do I connect my new computer to the "network"? (Not the internet)?

I just bought a new PC, and I'm trying to set it up. I've connected the monitor and the power cables and everything else - all I have to do now is "connect to the network." I swear, that's all the instructions tell me to do. I have no idea what the hell that means. There's a little diagram of a cable being plugged into the back of a computer. I plug in a cable I find, and now I have no idea where to plug the other end. To sum up, where do I plug in the cable to "connect to [the] network"? This is a secondary computer in my house. The first one has a wireless broadband router, so I'll be using a wireless adapter to connect to the internet.

  1. right silly question is your pc a stand alone one, if so then you don't need to plug it into any network, e-mail me or post again and ill try and help you, by the way stand alone means your pc is the only one present in the house/flat penthouse suite etc.
  2. you'll need to plug the other end into the router or hub depending on if you want the pc to connect to the internet. router = internet hub = intranet (homenetwork with not internet connection)
  3. Or, if that's the only computer, into the modem.
  4. If your first computer is on a wireless router, then you either hard wire your second (plug into the router) or if you have a wireless card installed in your second pc, then do a search for a wireless connection in your area, connect to it. If you don't have a password on your network add one with the first wired pc. Now they should both be able to connect to the internet. If you want them networked together to get files you need to go to the first computer and create a home network. You will need computer names and a floppy or flash drive. Then follow instructions save the settings go to the second pc and run the same network set up and use the floppy or flash drive. This is really easy.
